Nearly all
parts requiring re-plating will need to undergo metal restoration to some
extent. Before a part can be re-plated
the existing plating must be removed.
After years of exposure to harsh environments most metals have begun to
break down and corrode. This is
sometimes visible in the existing plating but the severity of the corrosion is
often concealed. Once stripped however,
the damage caused to the material becomes more evident. Steels
will rust and rot. Aluminums can display heavy pitting from oxidation. The worst of all is zinc die castings or pot
metal. These materials not only
corrode heavily but most castings were severely porous originally due to poor casting
methods. After stripping, this metal can
be found mushy, discolored or crumbling.
Any areas with these conditions must be removed. Also, any pits must be completely opened up
or drilled out. The plating to follow
will only adhere to clean, solid metal.
Most die cast parts end up being reconstructed using a combination of
solder, copper, or other metals. Only
after the part has been returned to its original size and shape can it be
finish plated.
